september in tallahassee is pretty classic. college town, football season, leaves falling, girls bustin out the uggs and too tight for your rear leggings even though it’s still 72 degrees, pumpkin patches opening up and the oven being on to bake the fall treats. classic.
i haven’t busted out the uggs (kidding, i would never) but i did bust out a can of pumpkin. of course. the pinnacle of all things fall. i was going to make pumpkin bread, but the recipe i have calls for three cups of sugar and since i’m trying to decrease my sugar intake i thought i’d better not. so i went with scones. the less sugary, yet equally as delicious cousin of the bread.
i used the king arthurs recipe and it was simple, fast and they turned out great. they aren’t too sweet, they’re crunchy on the outside, but soft in the middle. just the way i like ’em.
if you’re thinking of baking something fall-ish but you think it’s too soon cause it’s 90 degrees instead of 98, i say go for it. there is nothing better than a pumpkin treat to usher in the best season of the year.
